SHHS Alumni Association

Scholarship Program

2010  - $1000 Scholarship Recipients

Kara Marie Henson

Kara plans to attend Towson University where she will study nursing.
Kara's academic program has been rigorous with honors, advanced
placement, and HCC courses.  She has a strong grade point average and is a member of the National Honor Society.  Committed to community service activities, both for church and school, Kara has been a student mentor, provided support for special education students, and is a member of the Environmental Club.  She has been active in her class, serving as Secretary, and is a member of the Rebel tennis and volleyball teams.  Kara describes the personal attention given by her SHHS history teacher and tennis coach, Christopher Pollard, as a strong influence on her performance and motivation.  Mr. Pollard describes Kara as "bright and talented, a strong leader who is
unassuming in her manner".  Kara's future plans include a master's
degree and to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Ryan David

Ryan plans a career in architecture and will be attending Penn State
University.  He has consistently maintained a strong grade point
average in a rigorous academic program, which included honors and
advanced placement courses, and is a member of the National
Honor Society.  Ryan has served as Class President all four years
at South High.  In addition to playing three varsity sports - soccer,
lacrosse, and track - he also helps students transition into high
school and has assisted in the Guidance Office.  Ryan is an Eagle
Scout and leads youth services for his church.  Ryan credits his
church, scouting, and the South High faculty for positively
influencing his life.  Ryan particularly credits his class advisor,
Amanda Johnson, for helping him when he "needed a nudge in the
right direction" and when he "needed to slow down and focus".

The scholarship fund provides financial assistance to deserving South High seniors

who are accepted and attend a post-secondary school.  Any senior in good standing at South Hagerstown High School who plans to attend a post-secondary school is eligible to apply for these two scholarships. Applications are available in the school’s Counseling Center.  See Susan Starsnik for an application and more information.

SHHS Alumni and associates are encouraged to make contributions to the SHHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.   The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association is a 501.3c not-for-profit corporation.  Donations made to this organization are tax deductible.  Please make checks payable to:  SHHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund
